Feature Friday #9: tournament and game details, 64 fixes

This week, Ulti-Mate shipped: tournament details, game details with scores, a Links card, an updated flow to add people from a spreadsheet, and 64 fixes.

This week (September 18-24) we shipped: tournament details, game details with opponents and scores, a Links card on every page, an updated flow to add people from a spreadsheet, and 64 smaller fixes.

Tournament details

A tournament could hold its games, but a player invited to a weekend with four games was asked for five answers: one for the tournament and one per game. Most people answered the tournament and skipped the games, so on Sunday morning a captain couldn't tell who was coming to the 9 AM.

Now you answer the tournament once and every game takes that answer. If you can't make one game, change your answer on that game and it stays changed. The tournament page has a tab for each day, and each tab is one table: the game, its field, how many are going, your answer and the result. Once the weekend starts, a line at the top says which game is next and when to be there. On the schedule, the games sit under their tournament instead of as separate rows.

One tab per day, one table of games.

Also, every event has a "Field or court" now. It shows next to the venue wherever the event is listed, and it suggests the fields you've used at that venue before.

Game details

Previously, a game was named whatever you typed - usually "vs" and the other team - and the app didn't know who the opponent was. There was nowhere to put a score, so the season's record lived somewhere else.

A game or scrimmage now asks for the opponent and whether you're home, away or at a neutral site, and names itself "vs" or "at" them. Teams you've played before are suggested as you type. We also added an arrive-by time and which jersey to bring. After the game, enter the score on the event page: it shows everywhere the game is listed, and the schedule shows your season record.

A game asks for the opponent and names itself.

Any event can now close RSVPs a set number of hours before it starts, and say how many people it needs ("4 more people needed"). Captains can still change answers after the cutoff.

The Links card, next to Photos.

A drill's demo video, a venue's website and a tournament's Discord were all chips inside the details, edited from a separate modal. In the library, only venue cards showed them. Easy to miss.

Event, activity and venue pages now have a Links card next to Photos. Paste a web address, a profile link or an @handle, and it cleans up the link and adds the right icon (Discord included). You can edit, reorder and remove links right in the card. They also show on library cards, schedule rows and an event's quick look, and each schedule row has a chip that opens that event's plan.

Add people from a spreadsheet

Paste rows straight from a spreadsheet.

Before, you pasted a list into a text box, the app guessed which column was which, and then emailed either everyone or no one. If you wanted some of them on the roster without an email yet, that took two rounds.

Now you paste straight from a spreadsheet into an editable table. Set what each column is from its header, fix any cell in place, and tick who should get an email now. Anyone already on the team is flagged before you send. When you're emailing several people at once, you see the list first and can take someone off it. If an email bounces, Settings → Access says so at the top, with a button to resend.

Smaller fixes

  • New teams start empty. The example drills, plans and events now live only in your personal workspace, and a new workspace includes an example tournament too. If your team already has examples, delete them from Settings → Actions.
  • Plans are now called event plans, and a plan linked to a game reads "Game plan". An event's plan now sits at the top of the side column on its page, above the forecast.
  • When a save fails, the reason shows under the field it's about. A failed autosave stays on screen with a Retry button, and a "Reconnecting" strip shows when you lose connection.
  • On the Sunday of a two-day tournament, the event no longer shows as Completed, and RSVPs stay open until the day ends.
  • When you delete something, the name you're asked to type shows in its real capitalization. Typing it the way it was shown used to keep Delete grayed out.
  • Loading screens show an outline of what's coming instead of a spinner, and the month calendar and Access tab no longer jump around as they load.
  • On phones: switches, expandable sections and drag handles are easier to tap, a list that opens from a field no longer ends up behind the keyboard, and buttons don't stay highlighted after you tap them.
  • Accessibility: the closed phone menu is skipped when tabbing, each "Change" link says which row it edits, icon buttons are announced once instead of twice, and menus jump to an item when you type its first letter.
  • Plus the rest - 64 fixes in all this week, and the running list is in #changelog in the Discord.

What we're working on next

RSVP reminders that use the new cutoff, so players get a nudge before answers close. We're also building tryouts: set up your tryout days, have your staff evaluate players, and pick the team from what they saw. And we're still looking for more teams to try Ulti-Mate - if yours would like to use it and tell us what's rough, we'd love to hear from you.

Tell us what your team needs - the Discord or feedback@ulti-mate.app.
