Feature Friday #8: updated personal workspace, a site banner, 24 fixes

This week, Ulti-Mate shipped: an updated personal workspace to help you get started, a site-wide banner for announcements, updated team settings, and 24 fixes.

This week (September 11-17) we shipped: an updated personal workspace to help you get started, a site-wide banner for announcements, updated team settings, and 24 smaller fixes.

Updated personal workspace

Every account has a personal workspace - the place to learn the app and try things out before you set up a team. It was named like a team, "Victor's Team", so next to a real team in the switcher it read as a second team, and its example drills, plans and events stayed forever unless you archived each one by hand. A lot of archiving for content you didn't make.

It's "Victor's Workspace" now - your first name, or your nickname if you set one - and the name follows your profile, so a rename in Edit Profile renames the workspace too. Its address is a short fixed code that stays put through a rename, so a bookmark keeps working. The organization and home base fill in from your profile as well.

The example content is there to pull apart: Settings → Actions has a Delete card that removes every example, comment threads included, when you're done with them, and a Regenerate card that brings back a fresh set to start over. Neither touches anything you added.

Settings → Actions: delete the examples when you're done, or bring back a fresh set.

Site-wide banner

A new roundup was announced in the Discord and here on the blog, and nowhere in the app. If we ever needed to say the app would be read-only for half an hour on a Sunday night, there was no place to say it either. So the people using the product were the last to hear.

There's a strip across the top of the site and the app now. On an ordinary week it names the newest Feature Friday and links to it. When there's a maintenance window or an incident, it says that instead, one notice at a time, with the incident ahead of anything else. It reads the same on the marketing pages and inside the app, so it doesn't reset itself as you cross between them.

The strip above the app, naming the newest Feature Friday.

Also, the disc mark keeps its blue in dark mode instead of going white.

Updated team settings

A team's home was one free-text Location line. Changing the team URL retired every old link with a hint under the field as the only warning, and a URL already taken came back as "Couldn't save your changes" with no reason given. And an edit to the team's name or season dates was gone the moment you clicked the sidebar, with nothing on screen to say so. Easy to lose, hard to notice.

The home base is country, state and city now, the same three fields a profile has. Saving a new URL opens a dialog that names what stops working and tells you to warn the team first, and a URL that's taken says so under the field. Leaving a settings page with unsaved edits asks whether to discard them. The create and edit forms ask before the tab closes too.

Smaller fixes

  • Add events and Edit events are the first two rows of Settings → Permissions, ticked for coaches, staff, captains and players by default - wider than before, so untick the boxes if your team wants the old line. Editing includes canceling; rescheduling needs both rows. The grid says "Saving…" and "Saved" beside its title as you tick.
  • A chip in the topbar says the team's plan state in one word - Personal, Pending, Read-only or Team - and opens a card with what that means and, for an admin, what to do about it. The trial countdown keeps the spot while a trial is running.
  • The browser tab is named for the page you're on, so open tabs, history and bookmarks can be told apart. Before, every page was "Ulti-Mate: Practice Planner".
  • The calendar's event peek shows the forecast glance. The roster has tabs for guest players and other members, and a role nobody holds isn't drawn.
  • Adding a player to an event by hand now counts them as invited, so the next change to the invite list doesn't drop them.
  • A rejected save shows the reason ("That URL is taken.") instead of a generic couldn't-save line. Searching the timezone picker for "PST" finds Los Angeles again. Washington, D.C. is one filter row on the communities map, not two.
  • Settings → Access sorts by first or last name and dates each person by when they joined the roster. The "What's on each page" guide is wider, so each row fits on a line.
  • Locked and read-only controls show the same cursor everywhere and don't light up on hover. A toast holds while you hover or focus it, and its Dismiss button is first in the tab order rather than last.
  • An accessibility round: status text, the danger button and field edges clear AA contrast, every wait announces once instead of twice or sixty times, a wide table scrolls from the keyboard, sortable lists say what moved and past what, and the older charts have names.
  • A phone round: the return key says Next or Done on every form field, and compact buttons and page numbers meet the tap floor.
  • A speed pass: Home, the upcoming events list and the pending-invites list read their data in parallel, so a team with several seasons waits less.
  • Plus the rest - 24 fixes in all this week, and the running list is in #changelog in the Discord.

What we're working on next

Same as last week: game and tournament events with details of their own - an opponent, home or away, a time to arrive before - and the event page showing them. Attendance on Home and on a player's page comes next to it. Alongside that, more testing with real teams: if yours wants to try Ulti-Mate and tell us what's rough, we'd like to hear from you.

Tell us what your team needs - the Discord or feedback@ulti-mate.app.
